Flexible Sigmoidoscopy Preparation
A flexible sigmoidoscopy allows your doctor to examine the lower part of your large intestine (sigmoid colon). Preparation involves Fleet enemas rather than a full bowel prep.
Your specific procedure location, date, and arrival time will be provided by our office. These are general preparation guidelines — always follow the specific instructions given to you by your doctor.

Preparation Timeline
- Stop all weight loss medications (Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, etc.)
- Stop all NSAIDs (Aleve, Advil, Motrin, etc.). Baby aspirin (81mg) is OK.
- If on blood thinners (Plavix, Coumadin, Eliquis, Xarelto, high-dose aspirin 325mg), follow your doctor’s instructions on when to stop.
- Tylenol is OK to take.
- You can maintain a normal diet for breakfast and lunch.
- Have a light meal for dinner (e.g., eggs, pasta, soup — avoid fruits/vegetables).
- Give yourself a Fleet enema around bedtime.
- After midnight, consume clear liquids only (water, Gatorade, apple juice, ginger ale) until 3 hours prior to arrival time.
- Give yourself another Fleet enema 2 hours prior to arrival time.
- If you take blood pressure medications, take them with a small sip of water.
Day of Procedure
- You must have an adult to drive you home. No taxis or ride shares.
- Remove all jewelry and body piercings before the procedure, including mouth and lip jewelry.
- Bring your insurance card and photo ID.
- If you cannot keep this appointment, please call our office at least 24 hours in advance.
Frequently Asked Questions
This procedure is performed at an ambulatory surgical center and your benefits such as co-pays, deductibles, and co-insurance will apply. Please contact your insurance carrier to verify your benefits (this is NOT an office procedure).
